When looking back on the 90s, our culture will probably see the HIV/AIDS epidemic as one of the most tragic pieces. December 1st is World AIDS Day, and we thought we’d dedicate a blog post to sharing some of the sobering facts with you. Please share this however you can, and together, in our small ways, perhaps we can make a difference.

• Over 90% of those with HIV were infected through sexual contact
• You can get tested for HIV through a simple saliva test
• Only 1% of babies born to HIV positive mothers have HIV
• You can get results from an HIV test in just 15-20 minutes
• There are an estimated 35 million people in the world infected by HIV/AIDS
• 2/3 of those people live in Sub-Saharan Africa.
• There are an estimated 1 million people in America living with an HIV positive diagnosis
• 75% of those in America are men.
• The first reported case of AIDS in America was 1981.
• Since the beginning of the epidemic, over 600,000 people in America have died of AIDS.
• In 2009 alone there were 3 million new infections
• Nearly 2 million people died from AIDS in 2009.
• Infections skyrocketed in the mid-90s, but leveled off in the early 2000s due to better education and other worldwide efforts – and are now in fact even showing signs of dropping.
• There remains no cure and no vaccine for HIV/AIDS
