Today’s world seems to be filled with dreamers. People who care about ideas and “big picture” type things. As a generation, we have become averse to marketing and advertising ploys – to people who are clearly just trying to “sell” us. The reality, however, is that dreams alone do not create success. At some point, you do in fact have to “sell” your ideas. That is the only way they will actually take off and be what you dreamed them of being, correct? A recent Forbes article notes that being a great entrepreneur includes being a great salesperson.
Here are some ways to bridge that gap between dreaming and selling:
- Boost your confidence: be passionate about your product, and know that whatever payment is coming is well deserved. You are providing something of value to people – that kind of thing doesn’t ever come free.
- Find your niche: you are an expert in your industry. Speak to those people and clearly state how your product benefits them.
- Craft your pitch: you need a clear and concise message to give your audience. Tell them in a language they can understand why you do what you do. They will come to love it as much as you do if you convey it correctly and passionately.
- Socialize: Being in the digital sphere is simply not an option anymore. It may have been two years ago, but not today. If you’re not on Facebook, Twitter and YouTube you are already behind and will struggle to catch up.
- Actually engage: Instead of just doing the selling, also listen and respond to questions and criticisms. Doing so graciously will win over some of the doubters and remind people that you are a human versus a product.
- Be yourself: Don’t try too hard at being a “salesperson”. Just be yourself. Find a style and voice that works for you in a natural way. If you are trying to be something else, the only thing you will do is come off as inauthentic.
